Television Sets
Modern television sets come in four basic styles, including plasma, LCD, LED-LCD, and rear projection. Each technology has specific benefits and features, and by deciding what is important in your viewing experience, you can pick the right one and get years of enjoyment from your purchase. Do you need the large screen size to seat lots of guests, or are you interested in the highest definition available?
Standard CRT sets, which are no longer sold, are glass tube technology and offer lower resolution and higher power consumption than modern models.
Plasma TV’s are best for use in rooms that are not as brightly lit. They offer deep blacks and excellent colors, and are great for sports, action, or video games. Plasma TV’s are usually less expensive than the other technologies.
LCD TV’s are great for well-lit rooms, and offer a wider range of available sizes, and they are much more energy efficient than plasma. LCD’s are currently the most popular sets sold. These sets are best viewed from straight on, as they can lose a little focus from an angle.
LED-LCD technology is relatively new and greatly improved over standard LCD in that they offer the intense colors and excellent black definition of Plasma with the bright picture of LCD’s, and they are also the thinnest of all the flat-panel devices available.
Rear projection TV’s offer the largest screen size, and are often the choice for home theater installations or larger rooms where groups of people will be watching together. It offers clean pictures from the sides, and a decent overall performance that will satisfy the most avid video enthusiast.
